About This Project

Wabi Sabi

Created by Atlanta Ballet veteran company dancer John Welker in 2011, Wabi Sabi seeks to push the boundaries of ballet through the creation of new works by the next generation of choreographic talent. Wabi Sabi allows Atlanta Ballet to present new work that enhances the scope of the existing repertory, while offering new artistic challenges to its company members.

Wabi Sabi performances are free, public, world premiere concerts performed at outdoor venues throughout the city.

Background

Wabi Sabi takes its name from a Japanese worldview that finds beauty in the sincerity, simplicity, and integrity of the natural world. As one of the newest dance initiatives in Atlanta, Wabi Sabi combines our city's own emerging choreographers with beautiful and engaging venues for amazing outdoor performances that bring art to the people.

Project Details

Atlanta Ballet's Wabi Sabi wishes to continue an annual Atlanta performance series that uses the beautiful natural settings of Atlanta's public parks as a staging ground to offer free dance performances. Through this series, we hope to further our mission of providing world-class dance free of charge to audiences from all walks of life.

We believe in dance as an accessible and universal language that speaks to all people, no matter their culture or socioeconomic background, and one where they can enjoy in a shared and enriching experience together without the cost of a traditional theatre setting.  We also believe in moving dance forward with the times by fostering young talented choreographers to create new works, giving them the opportunity to work with world class artists early in their careers.

This series will take place in the summer of 2014 in some of Atlanta’s most beautiful outdoor venues.

Total cost for choreographers: $10,000
