About This Project

Lawndale Art Center is one of the only art spaces in Houston that shows the works of local contemporary artists. The large, exposed wall on north side of Lawndale's historical Art-Deco building offers a unique opportunity for artists to showcase their work outdoors to a very large audience at all hours of the day, no matter if Lawndale’s galleries are open or not. Over 18,000 cars pass the building each day.

Since 2011, Lawndale has offered this wall along with direct financial support and materials to local artists for rotating mural project. The current project "F Team" is on view from August 24, 2012 through January 12, 2013.

Artist Daniel Anguilu lead a group of 6 other artists to create a new mural in the summer of 2012 to kick off Lawndale’s 2012-2013 season. This collaborative piece by Anguilu, James Burns, Tierney L. Malone, Angel Quesada, Michael C. Rodriguez, Roland Salda and Dandee Warhol represents the first time this group of artists have worked together, and the first time some worked on such a large-scale project. The mural features elements of street art alongside traditional mural painting techniques.  Documentary filmmaker Alex Luster, director of "Stick 'em Up!" captures the creation process and will present the short-film at Lawndale during the fall of 2012.

It is Lawndale's hope to continue to program this wall as an additional exhibition opportunity for local artists and to energize Houston's Main Street with this dynamic public art project.

Lawndale seeks donations to fund a portion of the costs to produce this program.  $5,000  will help to cover artists fees and expenses, such as paint to cover the over 3,000 sq. foot wall and the rental of a stable lift to safely raise artists to the top of Lawndale’s 2 story building.

Artist proposals for future mural projects are currently being sought and information may be found on the Lawndale website on the proposals page,
