About This Project

As arts education in schools continues to face cutbacks, there is a growing need for cultural organizations like the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) to supplement classroom learning. The IMA’s Viewfinders program allows the Museum to engage with local elementary school teachers and students, enhancing students’ arts education while simultaneously improving their critical thinking and language skills (http://www.imamuseum.org/events-programs/schools-universities/pre-k-12/viewfinders).

Through the Viewfinders program, IMA staff offer teachers training and in-classroom support in using Visual Thinking Strategies, a well-researched technique that utilizes visual art to stimulate conversations that lead to growth in critical thinking, observation, and other cognitive skills. The curriculum is comprised of carefully sequenced artworks that represent a variety of cultures and media. Participating schools are also invited to the IMA for a specially designed field trip that encourages students to make connections with artwork in the Museum. In the 2013–2014 school year, Viewfinders is serving 3,740 students from 33 schools in Indianapolis.

Your donation would help underwrite program expenses in the 2014–2015 school year, including curriculum materials for teachers to use in their classrooms and art supplies for student art making at the Museum.
