About This Project

Open Studio Night for Teens are free, after-hours events where youth are invited to explore their creative potential.

Professional teaching artists guide youth through up to four hands-on art projects. Projects include a variety of traditional art media, i.e. basic drawing and painting, linocut printing, Sumi-e painting, and mixed media collage, as well as fun seasonal projects.

When not making art, youth can interact with glassblowers in the hot shop or tour exhibits in the professional gallery and the K-12 Emerging Young Artists’ Gallery.

Since starting in 2011, Teen Nights have caught the attention of the Everett Police Department as a positive environment to help offer gang intervention and prevention information.  "Since many teens today face pressures to engage in high risk and delinquent behaviors, we believe that programs such as "Open Studio Night for Teens" offer...teens options to engage in non-risk taking behaviors that still provide a creative outlet for self-expression," shared Kathy Atwood, Chief of Police, City of Everett.

During the 2012-2013 school year nearly 700 teens participated in the Teen Night program including an autistic 7th grade art student from Mari Atkinson’s class at Olympic View Middle School in Mukilteo, WA. According to Atkinson, “He is like a new person! He was SO excited telling me all about the glassblowing and when I asked if his parents went, he told me that both of them said they were thankful to have heard about it and very happy they went. His whole face lit up as we were talking; usually he has quite a frown on his face and always looks angry.”

There are seven Open Studio Night for Teens scheduled at the Schack Art Center for 2014.  Cascade Coffee, Inc. is funding two of the events, but we need your support to fund the remaining five Teen Nights.

Budget Breakdown:
The costs for each Teen Night is $1,107, which includes staffing, stipends for Artist-in-Action, art supplies, and food/beverages.

We are seeking donations to fund five Teen Nights for a total of $5,535, plus the 7% admin fee charged by Power 2 Give.

The total cost per teen is around $10 or the price of a movie ticket.
