ASD: All Should Discover Puppetry!

About the Project

About the Project

At the Center for Puppetry Arts we are committed to igniting the imaginations of children throughout the Atlanta area.  For 37 years, we have been the first live theatre and hands-on arts experience for a large portion of Atlanta’s youth; however we are always striving to serve more individuals through the exceptional, interactive, arts-infused programming that makes the Center unique.  Your donation will help fund new Sensory-Friendly Programming, designed with kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in mind.  These magical, sensory-friendly experiences allow guests with ASD to enjoy performances, Create-A-Puppet Workshops™, and the Center’s new Worlds of Puppetry Museum.

Autism Spectrum Disorder affects 1 out of every 68 children born today. It is more common than childhood cancer, cystic fibrosis, and multiple sclerosis combined.  In the state of Georgia, it is estimated that there are over 155,000 individuals living with ASD, many of these in the greater Atlanta area--so it’s essential that arts makers in the city respond to the unique needs of these audience members when planning programming.

Through the Sensory-Friendly initiative, the Center’s programming is adjusted to reduce sensory stimuli.  Performance modifications include adjusted lighting and sound, dim theater lights during the performance, freedom for children to talk and to leave their seats if necessary, and a quiet zone in the lobby. Create-A-Puppet Workshop classrooms are brighter, quieter, and will include slightly-simplified puppet designs with options for less-messy building materials.  Museum exhibitions will feature adjusted lighting and specialized educational activities, such as touch tables and guided storytelling.

Your support will allow this special programming to continue and expand.  The Center has already offered three sensory-friendly experiences, but your help is needed to fund additional staff training, specialized workshop materials, additional planning and production hours, downloadable pre-visit online resources, marketing strategies, and additional staffing for these events.

Please give and help us continue this incredibly important program series.  This is the only series of its kind in Atlanta and is greatly needed in this area!

“My daughter thoroughly enjoyed the Rainforest show! She was able to be herself without stares and or comments. The dim lighting made it sensory friendly, and the show program was just long enough. Please offer this once a month! We will surely attend and invite friends.”

–Center Patron at Sensory-Friendly Program Pilot, February 2015

“Our commitment to integrate sensory-friendly programming into our season in a more intentional way reflects our desire to invite ALL patrons to find themselves at home in puppetry.  The judgement-free zone we’re providing is a safe, comfortable way to introduce the Center and shared public art experiences to the children and families of the ASD community.”

-Aretta Baumgartner, Education Director at the Center for Puppetry Arts
