Help us give deserving teen dancers a summer filled with adventure, performance and opportunities to soar as leaders

About the Project

Moving in the Spirit is an award-winning dance program that educates, inspires and unites young people across Atlanta through an innovative blend of modern dance studies and leadership training. Our program encompasses high quality dance instruction, performance opportunities, service learning, education and mentoring - all offered at little to no cost, to ensure that every child can benefit from our services regardless of their family's ability to pay. In the safe and structured environment that Moving in the Spirit provides, our students discover their expressive capacity, forge nurturing relationships with peers and role models, and learn tools to overcome obstacles and prepare for a bright future. When they exit our program, Moving in the Spirit students do so as resilient, courageous and compassionate leaders who are prepared to meet the complex challenges of the 21st century and transform our city as agents of social change.

Every summer, Moving in the Spirit selects an elite group of teen dancers to participate in our most intensive training program - a 5-week apprenticeship that gives students the chance to deepen their dance technique, put their leadership skills into practice and inspire audiences through daring, dynamic performances. Participating students meet daily, from 9 am to 5 pm, working as a professional dance company to plan and implement a production. The students develop original dance work in collaboration with local choreographers and national guests, using the creative process to address the most urgent social issues facing youth in Atlanta's urban core. In doing so, they discover the rigors and rewards of collaboration, learning to cooperate, mediate conflict, and celebrate difference.  In addition to experiencing life-changing creative work, apprentice students also learn real-world skills and workplace values. They take on production tasks, teaching responsibilities, outreach opportunities, and speaking engagements - accelerating their leadership and gaining confidence in themselves along the way. The culmination of the apprenticeship is a performance tour, giving teens the chance to share performances, visit college campuses, and expand their cultural horizons. Their capstone performance is a show for Atlanta audiences, routinely a standing-room-only show.

We need your help to launch the 2016 Summer Apprenticeship! Your funding will pay for:

  • Faculty and guest artists creating contemporary dances with our teen performers
  • Costuming, props and supplies needed for the culminating summer production at 7 Stages Theater
  • Essential repairs for the Moving in the Spirit van, allowing our students to get to field trips, community service outings and performances
  • Underwriting operational expenses associated with the program so that these costs are not passed on to participating students
