Hearing Me

About the Project

Hearing Me is an initiative of The Developmental Center for Infants & Children/Early Steps Program that serves families of deaf/hard of hearing children as well as children with deaf/hard of hearing parents by providing bi-monthly informative and support workshops.   The initiative’s approach is unique, unbiased and the only support group of its kind in the region that focuses on the family as a whole.  In addition, Hearing Me will provide its 8th annual Holiday Gala for families with children who are deaf/hard of hearing on December 12, 2015.  Each year, the gala presents a different magical theme and welcomes families with creative props, scenery and professional staff in costume who interact with children while in character.  Children have the chance to participate in arts and crafts activities, games, face painting, a visit with Santa Claus, dinner and entertainment by the Master Hands Deaf Ministry from Living Word Church.  In addition, each child goes home with a toy from Santa.  The entertainment not only relates to the gala theme, but more importantly, is performed using American Sign Language.  For hundreds of those with hearing challenges and their families in Central Florida, this community event touches their lives by bringing joy, celebration and comradery with others who are facing similar challenges.

To support this event, any donation is welcome.  The project’s total cost is about $7,500 ($50 per family for at least 150 families).
