Offering arts engagement opportunities for families with young children.

About the Project

Why Are We Doing It?
In order to ensure that the local arts community is inclusive and accessible, WonderRoot Family & Youth Programs are open to youth and families throughout Atlanta and from a variety of backgrounds. Our Family & Youth Programs offer opportunities that allow arts-interested youth & parents and guardians to learn and create alongside their children and other family members. Participants build community both inside and outside of the WonderRoot Community Arts Center. WonderRoot Family & Youth Programs serve as a springboard for deeper discussions and connections.

Who Is It For? Elementary though high school-aged students and their families in the Atlanta Region, with a focus on the students and families in Fulton, Dekalb and Atlanta Public Schools. Funding will support programs in the City of Atlanta.

What Will It Be?
WonderRoot Family Programs are bi-monthly skills-building workshops in order to enhance parent/guardian-child relations through the lens of art making and art discourse. This program is intended for elementary-aged students alongside a family member or guardian to co-create artworks led by teaching artists through different artistic mediums (e.g. ceramics and photography). The workshops will bring together a thoughtful and creative community of families and teaching artists. Open-ended explorations of the art medium are welcomed and encouraged. No prior experience is necessary.

Also, WonderRoot will host three Family Day events in 2016 to elementary school aged children and their families. These 4-hour events are interactive experiences through a specific art medium (e.g. creative movement). Family Day events bring together a thoughtful and creative community of families and family-friendly organizations.

And finally, Open Studio Hours for Families will happen three times a year to offer experiences within the WonderRoot Arts Center. Families will have opportunities to engage in creative spaces including the gallery, the recording studio, ceramics studio and darkroom. Our Gallery Manager and Studio Managers will offer invitations to explore the space and engage in activities related to that creative space.

What does your funding support? Support from your Power2Give donation and the City of Atlanta will go directly to cover the costs of hiring teaching artists, purchasing supplies and materials, staff hours, and documentation of the program.
