Help us bring arts education to the next generation!

About the Project

                                     The August Wilson Monologue Competition

About the Project:

The August Wilson Monologue Competition was added to True Colors' education programming in 2007 to preserve the works of the legendary, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright.  Since its inception, the program has expanded to ten cities across the country and continues to grow every year locally and nationally.

The Atlanta regional competition introduces high school students across the city to August Wilson's work.  City-wide workshops are provided for participants to prepare to present a monologue from Wilson's ground-breaking 10 play Century Cycle chronicling every decade in the 20th Century. Students present their monologues in a preliminary, semi-finals and finals round. The top 3 participants from the final round of the regional competition receive an all-expense-paid trip to New York City to perform on Broadway to compete against the winners from other participating cities for awards and scholarships.

Why Should You Support The August Wilson Monologue Competition?

One of the vital components to True Colors' mission is educating the next generation through the arts.  Your support of our Power2Give campaign will help True Colors expand the reach of teaching artists into the community by mentoring students and providing free program workshops. Educators are faced with the dilemma of securing funding for arts education programs that are funded less and less every year.  It is important that we continue to show our youth the importance of the arts in our world.  This program is FREE to all participants and allows students to gain the following:

  • Self confidence, social tolerance and understand cultural diversity
  • Develop the fundamental skills of acting
  • Attain public speaking skills
  • Learn the works of playwright August Wilson

The expansion of the mentoring component of the program will be the focus for this project.  Students are mentored by community leaders from the arts industry and receive coaching from theatre professionals.  Master class and workshops are held to help students understand and connect with historical references found in August Wilson's plays.

Expanding the mentoring program will ignite a passion for the arts among student participants.  Please help us to reach the next generation by funding this program!
