These are just a few of the words the children of the Atlanta Music Project use to describe the art of music-making. Music ignites the spark, fueling creative exploration and an endless array of valuable experiences. Harnessing this power, the Atlanta Music Project inspires social change by providing Atlanta’s underserved youth the opportunity to learn and perform music in orchestras and choirs.

Founded in 2010, the Atlanta Music Project (AMP) was launched as a bold, new initiative to combat the cycle of poverty by providing underserved youth with intensive, tuition-free music education in their own neighborhoods. As a division of AMP, AMPlify is the first El Sistema-inspired choral program in Georgia. AMPlify uses choral singing as a catalyst for social change in the city of Atlanta. Started in 2013, AMPlify was housed for the first three years at Ivy Preparatory Academy Kirkwood. The AMPlify site is now located at the Zaban Recreation Center on Daniel Avenue in Atlanta.

AMPlify Zaban provides classes in choir and music theory. Students receive instruction on Thursday, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, and Saturday, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Currently serving 30 children, the program is open to students in grades 3 through 10, with most participants enrolled at Ivy Preparatory Academy Kirkwood. AMPlify’s rigorous training and public performances further develop our students’ grit, self-control, zest, social intelligence, gratitude, optimism, and curiosity.

While AMPlify provides conservatory-level music training, its mission remains social rather than artistic: to inspire social change by providing Atlanta’s underserved youth the opportunity to learn and perform music in orchestras and choirs. All children should have access to the experience of music-making. For many children, it can be the single activity that excites them and gives them a sense of purpose. Music is something at which they want to excel. AMP is there to serve these children and provide them with affordable music education in their own neighborhood. Because of AMP, they have the opportunity to develop their passion for music while staying safe and off the streets during after-school hours.

The AMPlify choirs have performed side-by-side with the Morehouse Glee Club, Yacht Rock Revue and the Atlanta Music Project String Orchestra. Performances have taken place at the Woodruff Arts Center, Spivey Hall, the W Atlanta Midtown and the Rialto Center for Performing Arts.

AMPlify is a kindergarten to college pipeline using neighborhood-based, intensive music education as its vehicle to change lives. We have strong local partnerships, a developing board of directors and an impact evaluation on the way. An investment in AMPlify is an investment in the future of children who come from low-income backgrounds, but nonetheless demonstrate ambition, artistic talent, strong work ethic and supportive families.

Your support will be matched by the City of Atlanta and will support the costs of our AMPlify Zaban Choir. Funding will allow AMP to provide the following:

$3000- costs of professional teaching artists to instruct children

$1000- costs of rehearsals and concert spaces to allow for quality public performances

$500- sheet music for children to provide appropriate repertoire

$500- audio fees for concerts and recordings to maintain high quality concert experiences
