Provide a safe space for young artists & writers to explore the complexities & challenges of life

About the Project

VOX Teen Communications has been metro Atlanta’s home for uncensored teen publishing and self-expression since 1993, when a group of 13 Atlanta-area teens and 10 adult volunteers created VOX, a teen-driven newspaper that would serve as an uncensored voice for teens.

VOX quickly grew into a holistic youth-development program, and for two decades has provided free, teen-driven, quality afterschool programming. We connect diverse teens to resources for building their confidence, increasing their capacity to meet life’s demands and ensuring their future success. VOX creates a culture where adults and teens alike value the voices of teens in metro Atlanta, and where, through VOX, teens will be prepared, connected and valued.

Atlanta Word Works is a new program at VOX that supports, guides and provides a safe space for young artists and writers to explore the complexities and challenges of life through oral literacy, workshops and performance. We believe that the arts – as a means of developing critical thinking skills, social responsibility and creative problem solving – provide teens with the necessary tools to enter a world in need of fresh perspectives to build peace, and bring much needed change.

Over the next several months, Atlanta Word Works will offer the following creative programming for teens to express themselves effectively and communicate with their peers about the issues that matter most:

Weekly Writing Workshops: Designed to prepare young people to become artists for social change
  • February, i LOVE myself: Explore the values of self-love, self-empowerment, confidence, and spiritual/meditative practice
  • March, Ain’t I A Woman?: Learn important herstory about unsung sheroes in honor of Women’s History Month
  • April, National Poetry Month: Explore various styles of poetry, and learn how to write in traditional and unconventional ways
  • May, Art Not Ego: Participate in several different arts forms, including visual arts and songwriting

Monthly Open Mic Series: Free teen open mic for the metro Atlanta area

Annual Youth Poetry Slam: Our youth poetry slam will select the team to represent Atlanta at the Brave New Voices international youth poetry festival. The preliminary round will be held in April, with finals held in May.

Art Not Ego City-Wide Festival: Held at the end of the semester, this city-wide celebration will incorporate all of VOX’s programs, including Atlanta Word Works, Art Club, VOX Investigates and Girls Group.

Funding from power2give will support programming within the City of Atlanta. Your donation will be matched dollar for dollar by the City of Atlanta and will go directly to cover the cost of supplies, transportation and program staff time to execute all activities. Supplies include everything from markers and flip-charts to nutritious meals which fuel teens while they are at VOX. MARTA fare, for our teens to get to the VOX offices and out into the community, is a necessary and important expense. We want to ensure that VOX remains as accessible to teens in Atlanta as possible.

Thank you to all of our donors and the City of Atlanta for your support of VOX and Atlanta Word Works.
