Collaborative Arts for Middle School Students on the Autism Spectrum

About the Project

ArtAbility is a partnership between Imagination Stage and Glen Echo Park Partnership

"ArtAbility has been an opportunity to transform my fellow participants and me into art lovers and performers to show that each one of us has the capacity to create something unique and valuable. We now have a chance to change hearts and minds far beyond the theatre." - Grant Blasko, ArtAbility participant*

Experts estimate that 1 out of 68 children have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

For young people with ASD, building social and communication skills is an especially pressing need.

However, there is a dearth of available out-of-school activities offered for any child with ASD, but particularly those who have graduated from elementary school.

ArtAbility—managed by both Imagination Stage and Glen Echo Park Partnership—is designed to serve middle school students with ASD, by providing participants with a wide range of artistic opportunities (including drama, music, movement, puppetry, and the visual arts). Arts learning itself is important, but ArtAbility research has proven how hands-on arts participation also helps develop important learning, communication and social skills.

ArtAbility will not only feature a summer intensive for middle schoolers but also a spring series of family events that can be enjoyed by the middle schooler, their siblings, and their parents/caregivers to meet the community need for family-friendly programming that is welcoming to patrons with autism and their families in a judgment-free environment.

This important program cannot continue without YOU. ArtAbility is extraordinarily grateful for the many years of support of the Jim and Carol Trawick Foundation. This year we are challenged to reach out to a wide range of generous donors to help us continue the program.  With Power2Give we seek to raise $5,000 to utilize as scholarships for ArtAbility participants.

“ArtAbility provides a wonderful opportunity for young people on the spectrum to explore their creative potential in a safe and welcoming environment. Being an artist is about telling your story. We are thrilled to be able to offer these young artists a wide range of mediums and entry points that provide them with the vocabulary and context to tell their stories in a unique and creative way, while strengthening their own communication and socialization skills.” - Diane Nutting, Director of Access and Inclusion at Imagination Stage
