WHAT IS THE CLANCYWORKS ARTS INTEGRATION PROGRAM?

The ClancyWorks Earth & Space Dance Residency is a 5th grade in-school week-long residency combining Science together with Dance. Students use movement to understand concepts in Astronomy whilst learning an introduction to the elements of dance, and culminate with a performance showing of their developed work, skills, and knowledge to younger grades within the school.

Throughout the residency, students learn the importance of leadership, community, teamwork, collaboration, and positive group interactions through dance partnering. Whilst developing these skills, students also learn concepts tied to the MD State Standards of Science, including the ability to:

  • Recognize that like all planets and stars, the Earth is spherical in shape.

  • Compare the properties of at least one other planet in our solar system to those of Earth to determine if it could support life, as we know it.

  • Provide evidence that supports the idea that our solar system is sun­-centered.
  • Describe the rotation of the planet Earth on its axis

  • Recognize and describe that the rotation of planet Earth produces observable effects:
    The day and night cycle
    The apparent movement of the sun, moon, planets, and stars

  • Describe the revolution of the planet Earth around the sun

  • Recognize and describe the revolution of the planet Earth produces effects

Students will visually see the science language and dance concepts that are mounted on a "word wall". (A "word wall" is a list of vocabulary terms that are mounted on laminated paper and temporarily affixed to the wall for each residency). Students will hear the material through a terminology discussion, learn the material through vocal song and "raps" that are worded to remember the scientific concepts, demonstrate the concepts kinesthetically, work collaboratively with partners, and verbally discuss concepts with peers and Teaching Artists.

  

5 REASONS WHY SHOULD YOU HELP TO GROW THIS HIGHLY SOUGHT-AFTER, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

1)     Students experience & development of science and dance knowledge:
Donating to this campaign will provide the entire 5th grade at Washington Grove Elementary School with high quality arts integration instruction tied to their science curriculum – a fun way to learn Earth and Space Science in the 21st Century classroom.
Many students have difficulty understanding concepts presented in the astronomy science unit. This arts integration residency will help with comprehension of this subject matter through diversified teaching lessons that attend to multiple learning styles. Throughout the residency, students develop an understanding that the seasonal cycles are a result of the positioning of the planets in relation to the sun. Dance movement helps the students to physicalize the ways in which the Earth and other planets revolve around the sun in order to enhance a deeper understanding of daily and seasonal transformation cycles.

 

2)     Building community relationships in Montgomery County:
ClancyWorks have worked with the teachers and students at Washington Grove Elementary School (WGES) in previous years through this Arts Integration residency with amazing results. We would like to build on the tremendous success of this residency by continuing to expand and improve the program and offer the experience to the new 2015/16 5th grade students at WGES.

3)     New educational structures:
The program has been so well received in the past that the WGES teachers have altered their curriculum based on the dance residency program, using the ClancyWorks residency to teach the material and then utilizing a traditional academic lesson plan as the review. As a result, students have shown greater retention and understanding of the material, higher test scores, and a heightened sense of excitement to learn the science concepts.


4)     Supporting local arts and educational organizations:
By donating to this campaign, we hope that you feel a part of the growth of programming for ClancyWorks Dance Company and also of the knowledge and skills of the next generation of active citizens in our community. The 5th grade students at Washington Grove Elementary School thank you immensely.

HOW WILL WE USE THE FUNDS?

The funds that we raise will be used for:

  • Upgrading our Arts Integration materials
  • Developing new and improved residency activities
  • ClancyWorks Teaching Artist fees
  • Documentation of the 2015/16 residency
