Help Our Performers "Dress for Success" by Contributing to our Dressing Room Renovations!

About the Project

The Lake Worth Playhouse is a federally registered 501(c)3 non-profit community theatre. We have been in existence since 1953 and reside in the historic Oakley Theatre, which was built in 1924 and is the oldest art deco building on register with the Palm Beach County Historical Society. The Playhouse is home to over 250 artists and volunteers, over 3,000 youths and more than 27,000 loyal patrons. A large part of what attracts artists, volunteers and patrons to the Playhouse is the opportunity to experience a production in our historic theatre. While there are many advantages that go along with producing live theatre in this type of venue, sometimes the upkeep and maintenance of such a venue causes unexpected costs and headaches. Normally, we budget for repairs or renovations and also are able to handle such unexpected costs through revenue from ticket sales, grant monies, donations of goods and services etc., but last season we experienced a catastrophic flood that destroyed a sizable portion of our theatre.

On July 26, 2015 during a live production of the musical Tommy, a torrential downpour of rain caused a sewer system back-up which resulted in the flooding of the lower portion of the theatre. This flood destroyed our dressing rooms, furniture, equipment and a large number of costume pieces. A disaster recovery crew, contactors, electricians and plumbing companies were called for cleanup and repairs of the following:

  • All the walls in the dressing rooms needed to be removed as they could not be sanitized or salvaged.
  • The main load bearing wall’s structural integrity was compromised and needed to be replaced.
  • Support beams were damaged and needed to be repaired.
  • New electrical lines needed to be installed.
While we were able to complete the repairs listed above, we still find ourselves with a floor and ceiling that need to be replaced to complete the repair and renovation of our dressing room. We are presently trying to find a solution to these costs before the opening of our 64th season on October 6th, 2016.

The dressing room is a sacred area for our performers. A place to to not only physically get ready to perform but also a place for our performers to relax, prepare, bond and to get centered before a performance. A dressing room that is aesthetically pleasing will have a direct effect on the psyche of our performers as they prepare to bring their story to life on our historic stage. We ask for your support in assisting the Playhouse in providing the best environment possible for our performers to succeed. We ask that you help them "Dress for Success".
