Help SRJO keep Jazz4Kids Concerts and Clinics FREE for kids!

About the Project

The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra is the Northwest's premier big band jazz ensemble. Founded in 1995, the 17-piece big band is made up of the most prominent jazz soloists and bandleaders in the greater Seattle area. SRJO's mission is to promote appreciation of the unique American art form of large ensemble jazz and to share the joy of live professional jazz performance.

Part of what makes SRJO so great is our education programs, which include our Jazz4Kids Concert Series and student clinics. So, what are these programs, and why are they important?

Jazz4Kids

Jazz4Kids Concerts are special events that provide children and youth a rare opportunity to hear jazz performed live in an intimate performance space where audience members can enjoy a very close interaction with the performers.

Each Jazz4Kids Concert includes:

  • "Instrument petting zoo" display in the lobby before the concert, letting kids look at, handle and play musical instruments up close.
  • One-hour concert featuring music from a SRJO main-stage concert.
  • Instrument demonstrations by SRJO musicians, and time set aside for questions from kids in the audience.
SRJO plans to present two Jazz4Kids concerts in the 2016-17 season (dates to be announced).

Diversity of Audience

These free concerts introduce young audiences to this great American art form, and make it possible for widely diverse audiences, both young and old, to enjoy live music performed by our region's best musicians, alongside nationally known guest artists. The “culture of jazz” unites people of different backgrounds. We promote love for jazz in young people so this special music continues as a significant artistic example of the strength of American diversity and creativity. By encouraging young people to enjoy and understand jazz, SRJO is building a community that crosses racial and age barriers.

Student Clinics
SRJO clinics are held in informal settings that provide an up close and face-to-face exchange between our guest artists, SRJO band members and local students. Our guest artists instruct students, and share stories about their art and their path to becoming jazz masters. SRJO clinics provide an important supplement to the students' musical learning, and allow students access to professional musicians they would not otherwise have---the inspiration that is generated in young musicians is palpable. These clinics are free and open to all students.

SRJO plans to present two clinics in the 2016-17 concert season. One clinic will feature GRAMMY-winning vocalist Carmen Bradford, guest artist performing in SRJO's February 2017 concert celebrating Ella Fitzgerald. Carmen will present a session on vocal technique with aspiring young singers, and share some of the wisdom and experience of her extensive musical career. The second clinic will be held in Edmonds, and will invite students from around the region to learn about improvisation and playing in jazz ensembles.
