Help our beginner cellists move their gear safely from rehearsals to home and back!

About the Project

Seattle Music Partners provides free after-school music instruction to more than 100 elementary school-aged children in low-income schools. Participating students receive twice weekly instruction, incorporating both one-on-one lessons and ensemble experience. Instruments, music books, music stands and even transportation are provided without cost to students as part of the program.

Part of being an SMP musician is learning how to take responsibility for, and care of, the instrument loaned for the school year. We want all our students to develop a sense of pride regarding their accomplishments, of belonging to a music-learning community, of having something to offer by way of self-expression. And to do this, our students need to feel comfortable that they can transport their instruments to and from school for lessons and home practice.

Many of our larger instruments are difficult for students to transport safely to and from home for their lessons. Picture a 10 year old carting a cello on and off a school bus twice a week with only a flimsy case separating it from bus steps, seat edges down the aisle, etc.! In order to protect and extend the lives of these assets, we would like to purchase a set of padded cases with sturdy backpack straps and handles so these fragile instruments can be moved without damage by our young players.

We have seen that when a student inadvertently breaks an instrument that they 'take a step back' from the program - they are less likely to pull the instrument out to practice, less likely to bring it to school, less likely to attend their lessons. A broken cello can cost anywhere from $150 to replace a bridge to several hundred dollars to fix a cracked body or snapped scroll. Having sturdy, yet transportable cases will save us hundreds of dollars in repair costs and remove a roadblock to developing self-esteem for our students, who are doing their best to move these instruments around.

It would be huge help to be able to purchase appropriately padded, yet easily transportable cases to supplement our inventory of cellos so that we can start the new program year without having to deal with flimsy cases, broken zippers, handles, etc. for these fragile (and expensive) instruments.

The Cost Breakdown:
6 full size padded cello cases-
retail price of $164 each through Musician's Friend.
6 3/4 size padded cello cases-
retail price $339 each through Woodwind & Brasswind.
Cello Cases Subtotal: $3,018
Sales tax 9.6%- $289.73
Power2Give 7% fee- $248
Total: $3,555

The payoff is immediate and evident - you should see our students' smiles when they perform in their individual recitals and in our ensemble performances! Not to mention the joy (and applause) by attending family and community members!
