Reflections of His World

About the Project

EMERSON BURKHART

Emerson Burkhart was a well known American Scene painter in Central Ohio during the 1930s until his death in 1969. The purpose of this documentary is to illustrate his legacy and achievements, which have not been featured in documentary film.

Burkhart was born on a farm in Kalida, Ohio in 1905 and became one of the most prolific painters of the American Scene movement during the twentieth century. Burkhart, who spent most of his life in Columbus, was happiest when he was found painting subjects in Central Ohio. Over his career, he produced over 4,000 paintings that explored the human condition themed throughout his work including portraits of his neighbors to urban and rural landscapes through central Ohio. Some of his early work included murals featured throughout Columbus.

AMERICAN SCENE MOVEMENT

The naturalist style developed gradually throughout the 1920s and 1930s, which depicted scenes of typical American life and landscapes found in the Midwest regions of the country. The art depicted with small town life and rural landscapes while some artists captured political themes or statements about industrialization and consumerism. Today, there is a renewed interest in this regionalism art movement. Burkhart's work in 2015 alone has been exhibited at the Griffin Gallery in Gahanna, Springfield Museum of Art, and the Ohio History Connection in Columbus.
