The Arts in a S.T.E.A.M. program for youth at risk

About the Project

Free Theater Training for Atlanta’s Most At-Risk Kids

Out of Hand Theater will provide theater training for free to middle school at Inman Middle School and Centennial Academy Charter School in partnership with Mental Fitness After School Program. Through this program, Out of Hand provides the Arts in Mental Fitness’s S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) curriculum.

Why Theater?

Out of Hand’s theater training for kids is fun exposure to the arts and more: it is designed to developed students’ collaboration, communication, creativity and confidence, skills identified by employers as critical for success in the 21st century.

Mental Fitness

Mental Fitness After School Program includes daily project-based S.T.E.A.M. activities and homework help in a safe and positive environment. In addition to our Mental Fitness program on Boulevard, Out of Hand will provide theater training at Centennial Academy Charter School, which serves the 3 largest downtown homeless shelters, and Inman Middle School, which serves the children of Bedford Pines. At Inman Middle, Mental Fitness will also provide a nutritious dinner and transportation home for the students from Bedford Pines.

The Children of Bedford Pines

Located along Boulevard and Parkway in The Old Fourth Ward, Bedford Pines is the largest Section 8 housing development in the South East. The neighborhood is wracked with crime and drug activity. Of the 700 families that live there, only 25 have a male head of household. The average household income is less than $3,000 a year. When the school day is over, the children of Bedford Pines need a safe environment, homework help, and a healthy dinner. Perhaps more importantly, they need a path out of poverty, a way to make a better life for themselves and their families. Through project-based S.T.E.A.M. training, we develop the skills identified by U.S. employers as most essential for success today, preparing these kids for college and careers.
