Support AFB in its 25th season by stepping up its musical representation of the LGBT community!

About the Project

The AFB Story
Since 1993, Atlanta Freedom Bands has represented our city’s LGBT community through music.   AFB Founder Buz Carr attended the 1993 Atlanta Pride Parade, noting the lack of a marching band.  He remarked, “Every parade needs a band!”  Then he set about gathering musicians to form the new Atlanta Freedom Marching Band.  Twenty-five years later, the band has grown from the original marching band to include a color guard, concert band, and jazz band — an organization involving nearly 100 musicians and performers today!

AFB’s Marching Band and Color Guard have appeared in events ranging from local to the international.  AFB regularly performs all over the metro Atlanta area in parades and festivals, including the Saint Patrick's Day Parade, the Inman Park Festival, the Atlanta Beltline Lantern Parade, and of course, the Atlanta Pride Parade, our city's largest parade.  AFB also performs at the Augusta Pride Parade and the Hall County Christmas Parade.  The Concert Band presents three concert programs each year featuring some of the newest wind band music.  Our MetroGnomes Stage Band offers hot performances of swing, big band, and pop music.  As a member of the Lesbian and Gay Band Association, AFB musicians have performed in cities across the country, including events of national importance such as the Inaugurations of Presidents Clinton and Obama.

AFB Turns 25 With a New Look!
To mark our silver anniversary, AFB wants to take an additional step in improving our representation of the LGBT community — creating new marching band uniforms!

Each time AFB's Marching Band and Color Guard appear in the community, we have a chance to be a positive, visible presence that helps to build a bridge of understanding and acceptance.  People who see us in a parade often contact us afterward to express their pride in having us there to represent them.  We often have the chance to interact with band students in parades to be positive role models for young LGBT musicians.  With your support, AFB can kick up our representation to an entire new level.

We are planning to engage the Fred J. Miller, Inc., company, one of the top band uniform makers, to create a completely new look to accompany the music.  The uniform, as depicted in the video above, will prominently feature AFB's rainbow music note logo.  We hope to raise enough funds to outfit the entire band and purchase sufficient extra uniforms to accommodate our growing ensemble for years to come.

Jump on the Bandwagon and Double Your Support!
AFB needs your help to create these fabulous new uniforms.  Donations of any size will help us reach our goal.  Plus, we have a few perks to offer donors at different levels.  If you are one of our early supporters, your donation will be doubled!  The first $5,000 donated toward the project will be matched with funds from the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs.

So don't wait! Click the "Donate Now" button to get the project rolling.  Then, activate your social networks by clicking the Share buttons for your favorite sites.  Thank you for supporting AFB's 25th Season Uniform Project.
