Atlanta's children. Surreal landscape. A Symphonic Hall.

About the Project

Atlanta based glo has been creating powerful, award-winning social performance, both in the city, the rural South, and across the country, for 9 years. In winter 2019, we will open a world-premiere site-based immersive symphony that explores youth culture, environment, hip hop, social activism, classical music, and alternative economies.

March 2, 2019

We've been making work alongside maestro Robert Spano and with communities in the Deep South for numerous years, and this project has grown out of that deep work. JUMP is a great way to look at the city of Atlanta in a very intimate way and then look at the people who are doing work in it. We offer the evening as an unearthing of innocence in these complex times.

We aim to draw JUMP in a structure akin to an impressionist painting, loosely familiar and abstract, created for moving artists, def poets, filmmakers and 75 of Atlanta's children gifted to weave between two surreal landscapes by courageously slipping into and out of mediums blending dance, social engagement, and performance art. How do we create art that will help us make sense of real tough stuff going on? The topic of children is an important one to us, we see them as a symbol of hope whose fragility is shared by all of us.

In JUMP we ask how do we get from underserved neighborhoods to an arts institution with the power of humble expression? With this piece it becomes very clear that glo makes from a particular place. It’s intense making, we're not just being held to the standards of classics, were being held to the standards of practitioners of hip hop, of socially engaged art, and the creative team for this project is being charged with making something totally fresh.

This project works hard alongside youth culture and how it informs various public’s and art of the ways a cultural symphony might be developed. So we've started to look at all the elements that we thought might occupy the stage together and we think these things collide towards a truth in a way that is so concrete that it doesn’t have to have any more explaining.

This project is a tribute to the real value of collaboration and deep listening. And what is more fruitful or empowering than to give some children a shot? With the cycle of violence that’s happening around our country in schools why not for a brief moment give them space on a big stage and we all join them.

Funds given to this campaign will go directly to providing meals and transportation for 75 school children, ages 7-12, over a 6-month creative process.  Thank you so much.
